The Cotteswold Naturalists' Field Club: Biographical Notes on the Geologists.

Roger F.Vaughan B.A., B.Sc.

Introduction

The background to the lives of the geologists of the Cotteswold Naturalists' Field Club were outlined in Volume XlI Part1 (1996). This current paper provides short biographical accounts of seventeen geologists who contributed papers to the "Proceedings" of the Club over the last 150 years. It is useful to know what their interests were, what were their areas of research, where their publications may be found, and if the collections can be found today. It may be useful to students and to those interested in the history of geology to find such details collected in one place.

The Clubs manuscript Minute Books located at Gloucester Reference Library (Gloucestershire Collections) have been used for the source of some of the quotations, and to show something of the geologists actual interaction with the Club. Many of the seventeen were involved in some way with local museums, their foundation, donating the collections or were often Curators. Gloucester City Museum was the source of some of this information, and thanks must go to Mr David Dartnall For making available the Museums records. The biographies are arranged in a chronological sequence relating to the dates when the geologists were active with the Club.
