General Information

The photographs and prints shown on my sites are the result of six years of collecting and scanning. The images must not be used on any website or used for a comercial purpose or large project without my permission.

Purchasing an Image

All the photographs are in my collection and can be re-scanned at a higher resolution for any purpose - but for a fee. I have a scale of charges
Scale of Charges

I can scan to any required dpi and print size and can send most images as jpg files through the broadband internet. Some larger tif files can be burnt onto CD and posted.

Copyright

All my images are copyright © Roger Vaughan Picture Library. I will give permission to reproduce the image for the purpose you state, but the basic copyright for the original image remains with me. All the usual copyright rules apply. All my images are of an age when the original copyright has gone.

Using My Images

Some of the uses for my photographs: book covers and illustrations, TV programmes, art work, quilt covers, calendars, jigsaws, magazine articles, educational videos and decorative artwork for websites.

There are between two to three thousand images online, they are held on a number of different websites but all linked from the index page on this site. Many of these are to be found in the What's New section and the 600 image Thumbnail Picture Library

Except for the published Edwardian actresses and the Downey Famous People, nearly all the other images are family portraits, and so are unique, there may have once been six or more copies held by the family, but usually only one now exists. Even the postcards with photographs of real people were a type of family photo and not the sort of mass produced postcard we have today.

Other Available Images

Other images available but not yet scanned include many 19th and early 20th century Punch Magazines, some 1830s and 1840s Penny Magazines, and a set of the 1840s Penny Cyclopedia, Bristol and London 'Now and Then', Many of the 19th century London Illustrated News, and the Graphic. I bought a large collection of 18th and mostly 19th century prints, maps, portraits and natural history prints, when a shop closed, these include Kings and Queens, and prints of British places, Picturesque Europe, and fill boxes, so far unsorted, two feet high, full of all sort of things, so if you want something - ask.

Family History Resources

I have a large 19th century book collection including many useful for finding people. The most useful of these are the Crockford's Clerical Directory - a list of vicars and their previous posts. Early Burke's Landed Gentry, Harrow, Eton, Clifton College and Malvern College school lists -see the Reference book Look-up on the main page - for most enteries I charge a fee of five pounds UK. Date a Family Photograph

A large section devoted to putting a date to Victorian and Edwardian photographs. The design on the back of the carte-de-visite and cabinet cards are explained and grouped within decades.
All the date an old photo information is here.
Ladies are presented by year to show how the clothes of normal people changed
1860 to the early 20th century.. Huge lists of photographs by photographer (a-z) show other examples of the photographer's work allowing you to see how your photograph fits in with the ones shown. Links are provided to lists of when a photographer was at a particular address, taken from annual trade directories by dedicated researchers. (Date an old photo link above).

Visitors Pages

There are a good many visitors photos to see - I cannot provide these images as they do not belong to me. I will add photographs that have an interesting story or relate to the family of a photographer.

History Pages

The history pages are just odd bits of research I have undertaken and you may find them useful if you want to know who was your MP in the 19th century, or a Darwin student or like to read early 19th century tours of England or all about Leonard Jenyns' year and tour to Derbyshire in 1830
